The Pearson accredited Higher National Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science provides students with the opportunity to develop an understanding of talent identification, performance analysis, sports rehabilitation and advanced sports coaching as well as develop professional skills to apply in the sports industry.

Successful candidates who have achieved a level 4 National Certificate in Sport or Sport & Exercise Science should apply for the Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science with us.

Career Opportunities:

UCS Students gain the skills, knowledge and aptitude needed for a successful career in sports development, health clubs, fitness clubs, sports centre management and sports coaching.

Many students gain employment in sports coaching, management and development roles with professional clubs, National Governing Bodies, and other sports organisations. 

Work Experience

Government surveys show 75% of students believe work placements provide them with increased confidence and skills. 

During the HND qualification,

students typically have two days of lectures and seminars along with at least one day per week of work experience, although the latter is not a requirement of the programme. 

Our exclusive relationships with professional sports industry partners mean that this work experience provides a valuable advantage, particularly when it comes to applying for a job.

How to Apply

Already on the UCS HNC? 

If you are already on the UCS HNC in Sport & Exercise Science, then as long as you achieve the required grades, you will be able to move straight on to the HND programme. Speak to your tutor to make sure this is as seamless as possible. 

New applicants

If you have completed an HNC in Sport/Sports Science, or a similar programme elsewhere, Get in touch and a member of our admissions team will be in contact to discuss next steps in transferring to UCS. 

Blended Learning

All UCS programmes are delivered through a blended learning approach.


This consists of 80% online module delivery and 20% face to face learning, allowing for streamlined group interaction, as well as assessment of practical skills such as coaching, training, performance and fitness testing.

The blocks of practical learning may not be at your home campus. 

They take place at designated UCS campuses. Attendance at these sessions is compulsory, and the options available are discussed during the application process.
