Some of our Success Stories

James Holmes - Teaching

“Once I finished my GCSE education, I moved onto college and gained my Sports BTEC whilst still pursuing the dream of professional football. The demands of managing an education course and a high training load taught me valuable lessons and life skills that have been important in my life since. Due to repeat injuries, the footballing dream started to fade and I explored the coaching world more fully. Taking every opportunity to develop as a coach; a journey that has seen me coach at age group academy level and men’s semi-professional level. However I was still unfinished with education and 9 years after leaving college I began the HNC programme with UCS. Two years later I have completed the most rewarding and intellectually inspiring period of my education and career so far, securing a Distinction in both years of study and overall. I am now enrolled to begin the final ‘top up year’ that will give me a full Degree qualification. My time studying at HE level not just opened my eyes to a range of interesting areas within the sports world but confirmed in my mind that teaching Sports as well as coaching was where my dreams lay. As a result, alongside my ‘top up year’, I will also be studying for my L4 Teaching qualification and teaching for VLUK on their FE BTEC Sport course. This is a challenge that excites me and I am grateful that I started with VLUK two years ago because it has given me the knowledge and platform to launch my career”.
